Shakira voted sexiest Latina
on the planet. |
Sultry Latin pop artist, Shakira, has
been voted the sexiest Latina on the
planet - beating off stiff competition
from fellow Colombian Sofia Vergara.
The blonde-hair diva claimed top spot
in American magazine Stuff's Loveliest
Latin Lady poll, and shocked pundits
by beating model Sofia - who's been
dubbed 'Viagra on legs' by lusty fans.
Mexican movie star Salma Hayek came
second in the poll, followed by Cuban
model-turned-actress Daisy Fuentes and
superstar Jennifer Lopez.
Despite her status as one of the
hottest women on the planet, sultry
Sofia only ranked at number eight.
A magazine insider admits, "There were
some surprising results. No-one
expected Shakira to finish first - and
we thought Sofia would be a lot
higher."

Another Shakira virus |
Shakira worms her way back for an
encore Sophos warns of latest threat
and rounds up celebrity virus 'dirty
dozen' Sophos, a world leader in
corporate anti-virus protection, is
warning computer users against the new
Shakira Pics email worm (VBS/VBSWG-AQ)
which is spreading in the wild.
"This is the second time Colombian
hip-shaker Shakira has inspired a
virus writer," said Graham Cluley,
senior technology consultant at Sophos.
"The popularity of pop stars and other
celebrities makes them a key
psychological aid in virus writers'
attempts to persuade innocent computer
users to open unsolicited emails."
The new worm arrives in an email with
the subject "Shakira pics" and an
attachment named "ShakiraPics.jpg.vbs".
If the recipient runs this attachment,
the worm forwards itself to everyone
listed in the victim's Microsoft
Outlook address book. It also spreads
via Internet Relay Chat (IRC). After
spreading, the worm displays the
message "You have been infected by the
ShakiraPics Worm".
Shakira is the latest celebrity to be
the subject of a virus. The promise of
glimpses of pin ups like Anna
Kournikova, Jennifer Lopez and Britney
Spears have previously been used to
help viruses spread. However, virus
inspiration has come from several
other less glamorous fields. Political
leaders such as Margaret Thatcher,
Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W
Bush and PW Botha join cartoon
characters including Pikachu and Kyle
from South Park. Even Bill Gates has
been used as the psychological trick
to dupe users into opening infected
files.
The message to computer users remains
simple - practise safe computing and
resist the temptation to open
unsolicited emails simply because they
feature a familiar name. Blocking
double extensions at the email gateway
or desktop will negate the threat of
viruses such as the Shakira Pics worm.

Independent label promotes Orlando act
with CD-in-drinks campaignALEX
VEIGAAssociated Press
LOS ANGELES - Pop singer Rachel Farris
has done her share of club gigs, radio
station appearances and guest spots on
tours for better-known acts, but she's
far from a household name.Look her up
on the Web sites for MTV and Rolling
Stone magazine and the Orlando, Fla.,
native is nowhere to be found. But she
hopes that will soon change. On Friday,
the nation's largest movie theater
chain and two Universal Studios theme
parks will begin rolling out 4.8
million mini multimedia CDs containing
two of Farris' songs, lyrics, an
interview and a video of the
singer.Soft drink buyers at Regal
Entertainment Group's 530 theaters in
36 states and the Universal theme
parks in Orlando and Los Angeles will
find Farris' CD inside lids on their
soft drink cups.
The theaters will also show a
three-minute video of Farris before
the movie. In all, some 25 million
people could see Farris' video in the
theaters or buy drinks with her CD
during the monthlong campaign,
according to Big3 Records, the
singer's independent label.The
multimillion-dollar marketing push is
an unusual move by a new artist, but
is designed to generate exposure
outside traditional music outlets like
radio and MTV, which are harder to
break into, said Big3 owner Bill
Edwards."The whole industry is in such
a state of flux," Edwards said. "It's
kind of a tough situation, especially
for an independent label, to get music
played, because were vying against
everyone else in the world."The St.
Petersburg, Fla.-based label is hoping
the campaign, which Big3 partly paid
for, will translate into record sales.
But Edwards concedes the campaign is a
risk."We know it's a gamble, but we
think it's a very good gamble,"
Edwards said.Enhanced CDs contain
music that one can listen to on a
standard audio CD player and video and
other content that can be played on a
computer.Using multimedia or enhanced
CDs as part of campaigns to market
music artists is fairly new, but its
time has come, said Tena Clark, CEO of
Pasadena-based Disc Marketing, which
has designed enhanced CD marketing
campaigns for companies like United
Airlines, Coca-Cola and Victoria's
Secret.
"In the record industry, the ways of
traditional marketing are over with,"
she said.Clark said she has been
receiving inquiries in recent weeks
from both veteran and budding
recording artists about developing an
enhanced CD campaign - but hasn't
inked any deals yet.In the past,
enhanced CD campaigns that have
featured music stars have been mainly
geared toward selling a product, not
the other way around, Clark said.A
promotion targeting teens by contact
lens maker Acuvue used an enhanced CD
with exclusive footage and song mixes
by Latin singer Enrique Iglesias,
Clark said.
Colombian singer Shakira also was
featured in an enhanced CD campaign
for Pepsi that spanned several Latin
American countries and Spain, said
Ellen Healy, director of sports and
entertainment for Pepsi International
in Purchase, N.Y.In that campaign, the
CD included one full song of Shakira
singing about Pepsi, clips from her
own songs and other multimedia. Some
2.5 million CDs were given away as
prizes over the past 18 months, Healy
said.Edwards took note of the
Shakira-Pepsi campaign when he decided
to do something similar for Farris. Her
campaign was put together by LidRock,
which is owned by Atlanta-based Convex
Group Inc. The company would only say
it cost several million dollars.
Edwards also declined to say how much
his company paid.
Message left with Regal Entertainment
and Universal were not immediately
returned Thursday.Making an enhanced
CD can run anywhere between 28 cents
to $4 per unit, Clark said.A photo of
Farris covers the CD label but her
multimedia content shares space with
commercial clips of "Stuck on You," a
comedy starring Matt Damon and Greg
Kinnear, and Universal Studios' theme
park rides.Still, the push is clearly
focused on Farris."I'm just hoping it
will (get) a good reaction," she said
in a phone interview from Long Island,
N.Y. where she was scheduled to
perform Thursday night with teen boy
group O-Town.
"It's a totally new idea, and there's
always risk involved."Farris said she
was initially concerned that people
would not want to buy her new album,
"Soak," if she gave away two songs in
the promotional CD."If they like the
songs they're going to want to hear
the rest, hopefully," she said.Edwards
said he doesn't expect everyone who
gets the CD will listen to it or even
like Farris' music, but that's OK."If
I could get 5 (percent) or 10 percent
... and they go out and buy records,
we've shown that this works," he said.

Egyptian Censors forbid Hanan Turk
from imitating |
After an official acceptance was
received from the international
Lebanese-Colombian singer Shakira
Mubarak for using her name in a new
Egyptian film “Shakira Fil Muneera”
(Shakira in Muneera), and preparations
began to take effect with Egyptian
actress Hanan Turk nominated for the
role of Shakira, a bomb was dropped by
film director Hamid Said claiming that
the story of the film belongs to him
and that Nihad Abdul Aziz had stolen
it from him.
According to the Qatar based daily, Al
Raya, president of the Egyptian
Censorship committee was shocked when
he was presented with legal documents
that state that Hamid is the official
writer of the script for the film.
Hamid demanded that he is given his
full rights being the owner of the
film and asked for actions to be taken
in his favor.
Hamid added that it is a sad fact that
the film industry has been split into
two those who have taken over full
control and those who are considered
to be the small fish of the sea trying
hard to make mends meet. Hamid
revealed that this incident is the
second one in which his work is stolen
by a bigger fish and used without any
mentioning of him.
The director said that he had at first
presented the idea for the film to
Nihad and began to talk seriously
about its script. Hamid was in shock
after working extremely hard on the
film to find out that Nihad had taken
the script to the Egyptian censors and
claimed it to be hers and had deleted
any reference to Hamid. Nihad had also
threatened Hamid that if he does not
cooperate with her and not mention he
is behind the story of the film, she
will make sure he is out of a job.
On her part, Nihad claimed that Hamid
*****ly accused her of stealing and in
fact the story for the film is hers to
begin with, and that Hamid is the one
who did the stealing. She added that
Hamid is known to be a trouble maker
and not many people like working with
him.
The Egyptian Censorship committee will
further investigate the matter but for
the time being has ordered that all
preparations for the film come to a
complete halt. The film had created a
commotion with the Egyptian censorship
committee previously, due to its title
and the fear that a lawsuit may be
faced. Even though the film does not
directly interfere with the singer's
persona, officials felt that it is in
the best interest to take precautions
against any expected legal suit by the
singer.
The film is about a young girl who is
infatuated with Shakira. The girl is
so into the singer that she sings and
performs in exactly the same manner,
in addition to looking a lot like the
singer.

Shakira In Lebanon |
Lebanese-Colombian world-renowned pop
star singer Shakira is in Beirut on a
private visit to get to know her
father's hometown of Zahle in the
Bekaa Valley and her parents'
relatives. Shakira arrived on board an
Air France flight from Paris
overnight, with her mother, father and
other family members. Press reports
said Shakira will not hold any
performances during her stay. She is
expected to hold a concert in Beirut
in September. Shakira spoke to
reporters outside the Vendome
Intercontinental Hotel in Beirut.
Shakira saying: It is my first time
visiting this country and it is almost
like coming back to my roots. You know
everything returns to its origins, and
here I am and it's been really special
since the time when we landed form the
plane. I felt great emotions in my
heart. I came here to re-encounter
myself with my past, because blood
does not turn into water and I know
that is an Arabic saying. I am really
proud to be Lebanese, and I have
always felt that way, and real proof
of that is that I started belly
dancing since I was four years old and
nobody ever taught me, so definitely
it's my DNA in my blood.

Egyptian movie about Shakira |
Egyptian actress Hanan Turk has been
nominated to play the role of
Columbian-Lebanese pop star Shakira in
the new film “Shakira Fil Maneera”
(Shakira in Maneera). The actress is
currently looking into the script of
the film in order to make her decision
of whether to accept the role or not.
Producers of the film felt that Hanan
would be the most suited actress to
play the part of Shakira for the
existence of a similar resemblance,
reported the Egyptian weekly, Al
Nogoom.
The film had created a commotion with
the Egyptian censorship committee, for
the fact that the film holds the name
of the famous singer and there was a
fear of facing lawsuits over the
issue. Even though the film does not
directly interfere with the singer's
persona, officials felt that it is in
the best interest to take precautions
against any expected legal suit by the
singer.
Head of the censorship committee
Madkour Thabet expressed that an
acceptance for the film should be made
officially and according to the law in
order not to risk any unexpected
lawsuits. Madkour revealed that the
whole issue began when he received a
rejection over the film because it is
targeted at the famous singer and uses
her name in its title. He added that
he did not find anything in the script
that needed censorship aside from the
fact that if the producers are to go
on with filming they must either
change the name of the film or present
an official agreement from the singer
saying that it is alright to use her
name.
Coincidence has it that the producer
of the film Hassan Ramzi has
previously run into several problems
with the censors over the topics of
his films. But this time Ramzi
stressed that the film does not
threaten in any way Shakira's image
and on the contrary it just shows how
much the singer is loved and
appreciated in Egypt.
The film is about a young girl who is
infatuated with Shakira. The girl is
so into the singer that she sings and
performs in exactly the same manner,
in addition to looking a lot like the
singer. The writer of the film Nihad
Abdul Aziz was shocked with the
censorship over the commotion caused.
She said that the film does not affect
Shakira in any way negative, and in
fact it just goes to show how much
Shakira is loved by women and men and
how most girls look up to her as their
role model.
Turk had also welcomed an offer to
costar in the leading role in the new
social and historic film "La Ahad
Yanam Fil Iskindiria" (No One Sleeps
in Alexandria) alongside Muna Zaki.
The film revolves around the time
during World War II and the important
social and historic events that
affected Egypt from the immigration of
a large number of Greeks and the
entering of German spies.
The film also revolves around a love
story between a young man and a young
woman who struggle with family
disputes and face a number of problems
for the fact that their families
support different sides. One family
supports the German and the other
opposes them and supports the English,
reported the UAE daily, Al Bayan.
Turk had recently announced that she
will not be accepting any new roles
until she completes her work in the
film “Hub El Banat” (Girls Romance).
The actress said she wants to be able
to dedicate herself completely for the
film. Hanan stressed that she does not
want to be working on more than one
film at the same time not wanting to
be over exhausted making her incapable
of offering her best.
Hanan had changed her mind on recent
decision to back out of the film "Hub
El Banat" (Girls Romance) alongside
Egyptian actress Laila Ilwi. When
Hanan had apologized from being able
to accept the role previously, Laila
made it a point to personally convince
her to rethink her decision and join
the crew of the film

Shakira's Mongoose Tours runs into
problems in Venezuela |
| |
Shakira's Mongoose Venezuelan Tour has
run into problems. At the
first
concert in Maracaibo, there were
complaints about logistics, slack
security and irregularities in ticket
sales.
According to Maracaibo broadsheet
Panorama, organizer Gabriel Fodor
admits it was a mistake to hand out
free tickets and criticizes the police
that turned up for security duty ...
"they came and watched the show and
that was it."
Local businessman, Jesus Camargo says
it was the first time he had tried his
hand at shows ... "I did it because I
love Maracaibo and wanted to offer
people the chance to enjoy
themselves."
Camargo says there were a lot of
people outside who couldn't pay to get
in and who became violent trying to
force their way in ... "the police
were nowhere to be seen."
Just before Shakira's second show in
Caracas, the Radio, Theater & Cinema
Workers Trade Union has sued the show
producers, Camargo & Fenix for
violating Caracas municipal
ordinances, which obliges national and
international artists to request
authorization before mounting a show.
The plaintiffs also claim that
Shakira's agents did not pay 10% at
the ticket office that international
artists must pay and did not inform in
due time which national artists would
be performing in the show.
